How beneficial is a smile?

I find myself smiling, not necessarily because I am always happy, but because I believe in being true to myself, and for me, that means wearing a smile. I distinctly remember my grandma, may she rest in peace, who always used to say that my smile would take me around the world. At the time, I didn't fully grasp the depth of her words, but as I embarked on my travels, I began to understand.

In foreign lands where I didn't speak the language, my smile became my universal communicator. It bridged the gap between different cultures and connected me with people who couldn't understand a word I was saying, even though my English could certainly use improvement (laughs). The smile became a language of its own, a language of facial expressions that played an unusual positive role in my interactions. It allowed me to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere, making others feel connected and included in the conversation.

So, I pose a question: Should we smile more? Is it a simple act that can be performed even when we don't necessarily feel happy inside?

Some may argue that forcing a smile when we're not genuinely happy is disingenuous or even deceptive. They believe that it's important to be authentic and express our true emotions, regardless of societal expectations. While this perspective holds merit, let's explore the benefits of a smile that extend beyond our personal feelings.

A smile is contagious. When we smile at someone, it has the power to brighten their day, lift their spirits, and create a ripple effect of positivity. It can turn a stranger into a friend, diffuse tension in a challenging situation, and foster a sense of unity and understanding.

Moreover, studies have shown that the act of smiling can have a direct impact on our own mood. We should never dismiss or suppress our genuine emotions in favour of a forced smile. However, there can be instances when choosing to embrace a smile, even in the face of adversity, can help us navigate difficult situations with grace and compassion.
